CHILD BENEFIT

(Updated 03/04/2023)

What is Child Benefit?

Child Benefit can help you with the costs of your children. It’s usually paid every 4 weeks.

If you're eligible you'll get £21.80 a week for your first child and £14.45 a week for any children after that.

You can claim Child Benefit if:

  • you're 'responsible for the child'
  • the child is under 16 years old - or 16 to 20 years old and still in education or training.

You may be able to claim Child Benefit if you live abroad. Please contact Citizens Advice IW Tax Team for more information.

High Income Child Benefit

If you (or your partner) earn more than £50,000 a year, you will still get the full amount of child benefit, but you will have to pay some of it back. This is known as the 'high income child benefit tax charge'.  If you’re not sure if you’re liable to pay the tax charge, use the Government Child Benefit tax calculator link www.gov.uk/child-benefit-tax-calculator
