The next step up from Urgent Care is Emergency Care. Emergency Care is provided by the Emergency Department at St. Mary’s or by calling a 999 ambulance. The Emergency Department and 999 are for life threatening situations e.g. major trauma or loss of blood, unconsciousness, chest pain, etc.
Urgent Care Service (UCS) (formerly Beacon Health Centre) is co-located with the Emergency Department at St Mary’s and treats urgent care needs. Those attending the Urgent Care Service will have been advised to do so by a health professional – doctor, dentist, optician, pharmacist, nurse, paramedic, etc. Those attending the Urgent Care Service, depending on their needs, will be seen by a nurse, a community practitioner or a GP. The Urgent Care Service will redirect individuals to other services where the individual does not have an urgent care need and their problem can be better dealt with by another service. *Please note that it is no longer possible to see a GP at the Urgent Care Service between 8am and 6.30pm on weekdays. At these times, people will need to make appointments with their GP practice.

If you live in, or are visiting the Isle of Wight you can now call 111 when you need medical help fast, but it isn’t a 999 emergency. You will be assessed, given advice and directed straightaway to the local service that can help you best. That could be A&E, an out of hours doctor, a walk-in centre, community nurse, emergency dentist or a late opening chemist. You can ring the 111 number 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Take care in heatwave say hospital medics and nurses Medics and nurses at Isle of Wight NHS Trust are urging Islanders to be careful during the current spell of hot weather which is forecast to last until Thursday 22nd June. The Met Office has confirmed that threshold temperatures, which are high enough to have a significant effect on health, have now been reached. Level 3 heatwave alerts have been issued for the UK including the Isle of Wight. Dr Maria Lynch, Consultant in Emergency Medicine at St. Mary’s Hospital said: “We’ve already seen a few people who have suffered following exposure to the sun or the heat today. It’s important that we make sure those who could be vulnerable to hot weather are looked after. Individuals who have a pre-existing condition, the elderly and infirm, young people can all be susceptible to the heat. During very hot weather, people who have long-term heart, lung or kidney illnesses, diabetes or Parkinson’s disease, as well as pregnant women, may experience discomfort if indoor temperatures are particularly hot and when using public transport. Without sufficient hydration we can all suffer. It’s important that everyone follows the advice from Public Health England.” Following this […]
