Idea: We hope to build a new Men’s Shed to benefit the community in the parish of Nettlestone & Seaview on the Isle of Wight.
Until we have our own Shed, we meet at 14.00 every 2nd Friday at the Seaview Hotel and 4th Friday at the Seagrove Pavilion. Come and join us if you live in the Parish of Nettlestone & Seaview.
(a) To promote social inclusion for public benefit through the provision of a facility particularly for, but not exclusively for, men at risk of being socially excluded.
(b) To prevent social exclusion by promoting the opportunity for friendships, social engagement and skill sharing in a safe and enjoyable environment, in which members can meet and carry out creative projects acceptable to the Shed and of their own choosing, individually, jointly and for the benefit of the wider community.
(c) To promote good health and wellbeing to its members through active participation and, from time to time, providing opportunities for relevant health organisations to raise awareness of good health strategies for the benefit of the Shed.
What we’ll deliver:
- Build new shed for workshop and meeting
- Assist with local community projects
- Build new community store
Why it’s a great idea:
We are all volunteers and part of a national movement to promote Men’s health and wellbeing. UK Men’s Sheds Association. https://menssheds.org.uk/ There is no shed or workshop locally and we hope to raise funds to build our own workshop & meeting place and a community store to help the local villages of Nettlestone & Seaview, including Nettlestone Primary School, the Community Partnership, Seagrove Pavilion Trust, Seaview Football Club, St Peter’s Church and Seaview Regatta. We will have a meeting place to promote men’s health where invited speakers can talk on subjects such as First Aid, prostate cancer, mental health and loneliness in our members and an aging population.
Steps to get it done:
- Obtain planning permission
- Prepare & dig foundations
- Lay concrete base
- Build walls
- Build roof
- Complete doors & windows
- Complete electrics
- Complete internal layout, work benches etc.
- Purchase / receive donated equipment
- Shed opening day
- Continue with external maintenance projects in the local community, before and after the shed construction.
We have raised support from the Parish Council, Community Partnership, Seaview Football Club, Seagrove Pavilion Trust, local builders and hope to receive some donations in kind for the concrete base and timber frame from local suppliers. Shed members will also provide the labour, with assistance from a local builder, to construct the Shed and community store adjacent to the current small football stand at Seagrove Recreation Ground. We are also crowd funding through the Seagrove Pavilion Trust charity (Registered charity number: 1148654)
We are supported by Age UK and age Friendly Isle http://iowsheds.weebly.com/
