Reconnect – Wellbeing Programme Shape & Connect for 16 – 19 year olds
6 week course – Monday 4.30-6.00 pm
Reconnect is a new project we are delivering at our Creative Hub in Newport. It is a one-year project, funded by the NHS Mental Health Trust and it aims to provide a range of creative sessions to help people, especially young people who may be experiencing anxiety or low mood as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.
The sessions are led by artists, not clinicians. The sessions are aimed at four age groups:
- 13-16 year olds Wednesday 4.30-6pm and Thursday 4.30-6.00pm
- 16-19 year olds Monday 4.30-6.00 pm
- 20-25 year olds Tuesday 6.00-7.30pm
- 25+ year olds Thursday 10.30am-12.00
Sessions are run in a rolling programme of six-week blocks (six weeks per person) and should be seen as a stepping stone to reconnect and empower participants socially. Participation is free.
So far, the groups have experimented with sound, visual and digital arts. The groups are encouraged to develop their own creative voice and each group works towards a common goal which may be celebrated at an event held at our Creative Hub.
If you, or someone you know, would like to find out more and to have a chat with us in complete confidence, do telephone Kerry Weston, Elaine Sheldrake or Hannah Griffiths on 01983 822437 or email info@independentarts.org.uk.
We are currently booking for sessions now to run from week commencing January 10th, 2022.

Event Details
The event will take place at the Royal Yacht Squadron Pavilion, Cowes on Thursday 29th September and the Trustees of the Foundation would very much like to invite all your young contacts and their parents/guardians to attend.
Since September 2016 the Foundation has held three Maritime Careers Fairs. These events enable companies and young people to have meaningful conversations in a way less focussed fairs can achieve. In 2019 we hosted 45 Exhibitors and over 1000 students. The event opens at 11:00am and runs through to 4pm, last entry 3.30 p.m. There will be a broad selection of companies, both national and local, showcasing the diversity of opportunity available within the Maritime Industries both here on the Island and further afield.
Please add this date to your diaries and we will be in touch with further information and an outline programme in due course along with a booking form to register group attendance. Do let us know by reply if you have a colleague(s) who should be added to our mailing list for the event.

6 week course – Wednesday and Thursday 4:30pm – 6pm
Designed to support low level mental health issues including anxiety, emotional wellbeing and promote self confidence through the arts.
We hope to encourage our participants to take ownership of their own personal wellbeing and support building their resilience and coping mechanisms.
Sessions will last for 90 minutes over 6 weeks and we have space for up to 12 participants per session.
Wednesday’s sessions will be all about mindfulness and learning new skills and coping mechanisms e.g. sleep hygiene, movement, mindfulness, body positivity and will be a blend of talks and creativity.
The group will be encouraged to create a journal for the project to explore the self and will include photography sessions.
Thursday’s sessions will be more music based and will include playing and recording music
Participants will be expected to commit to attend both days.
On the 6th and final week we will hold a showcase of work at our gallery at 48 High Street, Newport so all the groups have the opportunity to come together and share their work with invited guests.
