Free to attend. Limited numbers and booking is essential. Current sessions are full and the next block of sessions starts October 2021.
The project is aimed at primary age children and their families and runs from 10.00am to 12 noon on Saturday mornings, in 12-week blocks, covering mini creative projects that change every four weeks.
Activities are focused on a particular artist or artwork with some light learning about the themes for the older children and parents too. We’ve included everything from storytelling to drawing, to printing, modelling and iPad design work, and hope there’ll be something for everyone. A mid-morning snack is provided.
We ask that a parent or carer attend each week and join in with their children or child.
Picture Play is particularly for those children and parents/carers who may benefit from building confidence and/or children who may need help coming through difficult life events such as loss or separation.
With lots of collaborative project based activities, and the many benefits of team work and ideas sharing, there are an abundance of opportunities to learn creative skills too.
Please contact us for more information or to enquire about booking.
We are grateful to Isle of Wight Council for funding Picture Play.

Reconnect – Wellbeing Programme Shape & Connect for 16 – 19 year olds
6 week course – Monday 4.30-6.00 pm
Reconnect is a new project we are delivering at our Creative Hub in Newport. It is a one-year project, funded by the NHS Mental Health Trust and it aims to provide a range of creative sessions to help people, especially young people who may be experiencing anxiety or low mood as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.
The sessions are led by artists, not clinicians. The sessions are aimed at four age groups:
- 13-16 year olds Wednesday 4.30-6pm and Thursday 4.30-6.00pm
- 16-19 year olds Monday 4.30-6.00 pm
- 20-25 year olds Tuesday 6.00-7.30pm
- 25+ year olds Thursday 10.30am-12.00
Sessions are run in a rolling programme of six-week blocks (six weeks per person) and should be seen as a stepping stone to reconnect and empower participants socially. Participation is free.
So far, the groups have experimented with sound, visual and digital arts. The groups are encouraged to develop their own creative voice and each group works towards a common goal which may be celebrated at an event held at our Creative Hub.
If you, or someone you know, would like to find out more and to have a chat with us in complete confidence, do telephone Kerry Weston, Elaine Sheldrake or Hannah Griffiths on 01983 822437 or email info@independentarts.org.uk.
We are currently booking for sessions now to run from week commencing January 10th, 2022.
