Cowes Men’s Shed
Cowes Men’s Shed is open to everyone aged 18 and over and not just men! 25% of our members are women. We offer a carpentry workshop, craft room, IT area and gardens with polytunnels, raised beds, seating areas and even red squirrels. There is no membership fee and the Shed is ready to welcome you five days a week (Mon-Fri) 10am to 3pm, 50 weeks of the year. Free parking is available locally and the Cowes Park and Ride bus stop is just a few minutes along the road. Come along to connect, converse and create!
Some sheds locally exclude women and men aged younger than 55, so if that has happened and you are disappointed, do come to Cowes Men’s Shed and join our ‘shedders’.
Our Project Leader is available to lend a hand, give guidance (when requested) and to show members how to use equipment unfamiliar to them.
Besides woodwork and pottering about in the gardens, we have also played host to people quilling, knitting, model-making, singing and numerous craft activities.
If you don’t fancy doing anything practical – you can always pop in for a chat and a cuppa. Arrive when you like, leave when you like. No commitment.

Tuesday’s from 2pm to 3pm at The Creative Hub, 48 High Street, Newport, PO30 1SE
The idea for the project came from local people who approached Independent Arts to help them set up the group.
Independent Arts ran a pilot scheme and found that, for group members, socialising with other people going through similar experiences was the most important part of the project.
The intention is to establish a steering group in the hope of the project becoming independently run by its members.

We opened the bridge club at the Pavilion in September 2013 and players were thrilled at being able to play a serious game of bridge in a friendly and helpful environment. This prompted us to test the water in creating training sessions for those who wished to learn the game and we have trained over 30 who now play at the club.
You don’t need a partner and beverages and biscuits are provided for a great afternoons bridge for just £3. All playing standards welcome. Average 5 to 6 tables per session.

Who is this session for?
Children aged 4-11 years who are autistic. This includes those waiting for or actively seeking an assessment.
An adult is required for every 2 children.
If you are a single parent with no other support and need to bring more than 2 children (including siblings) please contact us and we will help with your booking arrangements.
What happens?
We have a range of activities, crafts and games to enjoy together with other young people, as well as individual activities if you don’t feel like joining in.
There is also a quiet area to chill out.
We hope you will be able to meet some new people and make some friends.
Parents can sit and chat and get some help or advice.
What else is there?
You can borrow books and equipment from the sensory library and look at resources.
AIM’s peers supporters can talk to you about autism and life as an autistic person.
What if I am very anxious?
We can arrange to meet you before the session if it helps, in person or by video call. We can meet you at the entrance as well.
How do I find you?
When you arrive at the Riverside Centre you will need to enter your car registration number on the iPad in reception if you park in the car park.
You walk straight down the corridor in front of you to the very end. We are at the bottom of the corridor. Claire, Jude and David are the people who run the session.

Event Details
Reconnect is a new project we are delivering at our Creative Hub in Newport. It is a one-year project, funded by the NHS Mental Health Trust and it aims to provide a range of creative sessions to help people, especially young people who may be experiencing anxiety or low mood as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.
The sessions are led by artists, not clinicians. The sessions are aimed at four age groups:
- 13-16 year olds Wednesday 4.30-6pm and Thursday 4.30-6.00pm
- 16-19 year olds Monday 4.30-6.00 pm
- 20-25 year olds Tuesday 6.00-7.30pm
- 25+ year olds Thursday 10.30am-12.00
Sessions are run in a rolling programme of six-week blocks (six weeks per person) and should be seen as a stepping stone to reconnect and empower participants socially. Participation is free.
So far, the groups have experimented with sound, visual and digital arts. The groups are encouraged to develop their own creative voice and each group works towards a common goal which may be celebrated at an event held at our Creative Hub.
If you, or someone you know, would like to find out more and to have a chat with us in complete confidence, do telephone Kerry Weston, Elaine Sheldrake or Hannah Griffiths on 01983 822437 or email info@independentarts.org.uk.
We are currently booking for sessions now to run from week commencing January 10th, 2022.

We started in September 2013 with the help of Age UK IW and the majority of us organisers are in their Good Neighbour Scheme. We seemed to set off with a bang straight off and now regularly have between 24 and 30 turn up.
Seagrove Seniors social club is a warm and friendly club for all people in the area of a certain age!
We meet on alternate Wednesdays between 2 and 4 o’clock in the pavilion and charge £2 per session.
It’s a great place to meet up with old friends or to make new ones, we try to vary our programme a bit , but there is always a fiendish quiz and lots of tea and home made cakes.
Do come along and give us a try.

We hope to encourage our participants to take ownership of their own personal wellbeing and support building their resilience and coping mechanisms.
Sessions will last for 90 minutes over 6 weeks and we have space for up to 12 participants per session.
Wednesday’s sessions will be all about mindfulness and learning new skills and coping mechanisms e.g. sleep hygiene, movement, mindfulness, body positivity and will be a blend of talks and creativity.
The group will be encouraged to create a journal for the project to explore the self and will include photography sessions.
Thursday’s sessions will be more music based and will include playing and recording music
Participants will be expected to commit to attend both days.
On the 6th and final week we will hold a showcase of work at our gallery at 48 High Street, Newport so all the groups have the opportunity to come together and share their work with invited guests.

Reconnect – Wellbeing Programme Shape & Connect for 13 – 16 year olds
6 week course – Wednesday and Thursday 4:30pm – 6pm
Designed to support low level mental health issues including anxiety, emotional wellbeing and promote self confidence through the arts.

Event Details
Mindful Moments is a chance to explore mindfulness and creativity, promoting feelings of wellbeing and a calmer state of mind. A chance to let go of our ideas of what art and creativity is and just be free to express ourselves. (No art experience necessary.)
We start each session with some mindfulness, such as breath awareness, a mini meditation or some mindful movement, to bring us into the present moment. Which prepares us for exploring different creative activities, such as expressive drawing, painting to music, Sumi – Japanese painting, origami, wire creations and more.
These sessions are held on Friday mornings 10.30am – 11.30am in Independent Arts’ Creative Hub, our lovely workshop and gallery space in the centre of Newport.
Sessions are free, but donations to support the work of arts for wellbeing charity, Independent Arts, are always welcome.

Free to attend. Limited numbers and booking is essential. Current sessions are full and the next block of sessions starts October 2021.
The project is aimed at primary age children and their families and runs from 10.00am to 12 noon on Saturday mornings, in 12-week blocks, covering mini creative projects that change every four weeks.
Activities are focused on a particular artist or artwork with some light learning about the themes for the older children and parents too. We’ve included everything from storytelling to drawing, to printing, modelling and iPad design work, and hope there’ll be something for everyone. A mid-morning snack is provided.
We ask that a parent or carer attend each week and join in with their children or child.
Picture Play is particularly for those children and parents/carers who may benefit from building confidence and/or children who may need help coming through difficult life events such as loss or separation.
With lots of collaborative project based activities, and the many benefits of team work and ideas sharing, there are an abundance of opportunities to learn creative skills too.
Please contact us for more information or to enquire about booking.
We are grateful to Isle of Wight Council for funding Picture Play.
